How to Protect Your Art against Damage during Moving?

Whether it is a vast collection of artwork or a few valuable pieces, safety is a big concern while moving. It can be heartbreaking to witness your artwork in a damaged state. You would want to keep all your delicate pieces intact. Therefore, it is helpful to be aware of a secure way of moving your artwork.

Here are some easy steps to package and transport your artwork securely:

  1. Cover with painters’ tape- Most artworks are covered with glass which can easily break during moving. Therefore, you should cover it using painters’ tape to protect it from breakage. Even if the glass breaks, the tape will ensure that it does not harm your painting.
  2. Cover with glassine- During moving, artworks can get damaged because of grease, water, and oil. Therefore, you must cover your paintings with glassine, a special craft paper, to protect them from such damages.
  3. Cover with palette wrap- During moving, paintings are prone to moisture damage and scratches. Cover them with several layers of palette wrap to protect against damage.
  4. Place artwork between two layers of cardboard- Place one layer of cardboard on each side of your painting and tape them together to provide superior protection during the moving. Ensure that the layers are broader and taller than the painting.
  5.   Cover with bubble wrap- During moving, the paintings are likely to be subject to temperature fluctuations. Cover them in bubble wrap as it acts as an insulator.
  6. Use the right boxes- Avoid packing your painting in an old box. Instead, pack them in mirror boxes as they protect the corners of your paintings.
  7.   Fill up the extra spaces- Although the mirror boxes hug your paintings securely, you must fill up all the extra spaces in the box using bubble wrap or tissue paper. It will ensure that the paintings do not shift in the boxes during the move.
  8. Seal the boxes- Sometimes, the packaging can come undone, damaging the paintings during shipping. To avoid this, seal your boxes tightly using high-quality packing tape. Also, label the boxes as ‘fragile’ or ‘artwork’ so the movers handle them with extra care.
  9. Store the boxes upright- If you lay the boxes flat, your paintings can be easily damaged if any object falls on them. Therefore, you must place the boxes in an upright position and let them rest on the edges. In this case, even if an object falls on the boxes, the frame will protect the paintings.
  10. Hire professionals – When handling your artwork, you might feel nervous. Therefore, it is better to hire professionals to pack and move your artwork safely.
